Fix makefiles for compilation in a different directory.

Handle exit code translation failures gracefully.

Apparantly, "X=`false`" fails with a non-zero exit code
(and the script stops), even though "echo `false`" doesn't.

Avoid Perl when printing signal names.

Use `kill -l $SIG` as suggested by Lukas Turek.

already has the new extension and it is processed according to it.

Replaced FREE_PASCAL_RTE by a generic EXIT_CODE_HOOK.
